The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has held a joint press conference together with partners under the Uganda Media Sector Working Group (UMSWG) to flag off joint commemoration activities for the World Press Freedom Day (WPFD). The press Conference was jointly addressed by Member of the Commission Hon. Crispin Kaheru who represented the Chairperson Hon. Mariam Wangadya, the Coordinator of Sector Working Group Dr. George William Lugalambi and Ms. Jan Ajwang from Media Focus on Africa.
“The theme a Press for the planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis, particularly challenges us to take action to address the environmental challenges that we cannot confront in isolation,” Hon. Kaheru said while addressing this Press Conference held today at the Uganda Media Canter in Kampala. He urged all stakeholders “primarily the government” to support all the press efforts to bring awareness on issues affecting the environment, to initiate and pass appropriate policies and laws that will encourage and facilitate proper coverage of environmental issues. He also called upon the general public to support and where possible to give and facilitate the press with information on issues affecting the environment.
On his part, Dr. Lugalambi said the commemoration is intended to highlight the crisis and the role/importance of journalism and freedom of expression in shaping solutions to the impending global disaster.
