The Uganda Human Rights Commission issues  preliminary statement on the 2026 general elections.

The Uganda Human Rights Commission has today, Sunday 18th January 2026, issued a preliminary statement on the 2026 general elections. The statement was read by the Chairperson of the Commission, Hon. Mariam Wangadya who was joined by Members; Hon. Crispin Kaheru, Hon. Shifrah Lukwago, and Hon. Simeo Muwanga Nsubuga.
Also in attendance was the Acting Director, Monitoring and Inspections, Ms. Pauline Nansamba Mutumba; Mr. Kamadi Byonabye, Director, Research, Education, and Documentation; and members of the UHRC Situation Room.
The Chairperson noted that despite the technical challenges of the Biometric Voter Verification Kits (BVVKs), Ugandans were able to exercise their right to vote freely and fairly.
She noted that the UHRC observed a generally peaceful polling day across the country, except in some areas where the media reported arrests, and deaths.
She recommended that the EC strengthens voter education and tests all electoral technologies prior to polling.
