Hon (Rtd) Justice Gideon Tinyinondi is one of the two new Members who joined the newly appointed Members of the Commission of the Uganda Human Rights Commission which took office Friday 5thFebruary 2016. He previously worked as Judge of the High Court of Uganda for over 16 years until 2008 when he retired after a distinguished service. He joined the judiciary in the Ministry of Justice and Office of the Attorney General where he rose through the ranks to the position of Principal State Attorney from 1969 to 1978. He thereafter went into private practice for about 13 years and later joined the High Court of Ugandain 1991 where he headed several divisions until he was promoted to the position of a Judge in 1992.He boasts of an elaborate career as a judicial officer, advocate and arbitrator spanning over 46 years.
The Hon (Rtd) Justice Tinyinondi obtained his Bachelor’s Degree of Laws from the University of Dar-es-Saalam, Tanzania in 1969 and a Diploma in International Treaty Registration at Queens University in Canada in the same year. He has throughout his career as a Judicial Officer been a keen follower of human rights developments and re-known human rights defenders on the local, regional and international scenes.
After retirement from the civil service in 2009, he joined Kiwanuka and Karugire Advocates and Solicitors as a consultant and legal advisor, until January 2016 when he was appointed as a Member of the Commission of the Uganda Human Rights Commission. He brings to the Commission and specifically its tribunal function, a wealth of knowledge on arbitration and access to justice during his contractual period of six years.
