Joint activities to commemorate the world press freedom
The Uganda human Rights Commission joined the rest of the world to commemorate the world freedom day on Thursday 3rd May 2018. The commission carried out joint activites with partners from selected civil society organizations who have been key in advocating for the right to freedom of expression and specifically press freedom as a way of advocating for the advancement of these rights in Uganda, under the global theme “Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The rule of Law.”
The Commission and its partners who among others include the African Center for Media Excellence (ACME), Uganda Media Women Association (UMWA), Uganda Journalists Association (UJA), Uganda National Commission for UNESCO, UN Human Ruman Rights – Uganda, Human Rights Network for Journalists (HRNJ) and Makerere University’s Department of Jounanalism and Communication carriied out two major activities
A peaceful procession through Kampala to raise public awareness about the day that started and ended at Kampala Railway Grounds on Thursday 3rd May 2018 starting at 8:00am.The chief walker was Mr. Opon Ofwondo and the Chief guest was the Speaker of the Republic of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga. A dialogue to share preliminary findings on the ongoing Survey/ Research on the Best Media Self-Regulation Model was later conducted at Makerere University Senate Building at 2:00pm.
